We are proud to announce the new Science for Action series, jointly coordinated by the International Land Coalition (ILC) and the Global Land Programme (GLP). It brings together key findings from research networks relevant to ILC’S ten commitments to People-Centred Land Governance. The series facilitates exchange of knowledge between scientists, civil society, and grassroots organisations to strengthen efforts of land users, practitioners and policy-makers to bring about positive change in land governance.

The first brief, Securing Land and Territorial Rights for Indigenous Peoples, is now available on our website. It is based on the research of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), a member of the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR), and an ILC member.

We continue our series on OSM 2019 interactive and immersive sessions with an overview of session 360N at the conference, where organizers took the opportunity to convene an open, in-person community discussion on the state of the art, open challenges, and ways forward for SES models in LSS.

The GLP Taipei Nodal Office held a free three-day online workshop in July on how to measure error and temporal change for a variety of applications, in particular for GIS-based land change simulation. The presenter, Prof. Robert Gilmore Pontius, Jr., showed how to avoid common mistakes and to use enlightening techniques such as the Total Operating Characteristic and Difference Components. There were 206 registrants from 56 countries for the workshop, and participants ranged from university students to senior scientists.

Impacts of Chilean forest subsidies on forest cover, carbon and biodiversity
Robert Heilmayr, Cristian Echeverría and Eric F. Lambin have a paper in Nature Sustainability showing that poorly designed payments for afforestation can undermine carbon benefits, and can have negative impacts on biodiversity. Read the abstract

Deforestation spillovers from oil palm sustainability certification
Robert Heilmayr, Kim Carlson, and Jason Jon Benedict have a new paper in Environmental Research Letters on deforestation spillovers from RSPO certification in Indonesia. The paper provides some interesting evidence to suggest that eco-certification can strengthen compliance with government land use restrictions. Read the abstract

Belmont Forum launches Collaborative Research Action on theme of Pathways for Sustainability
To help provide a science base for achieving sustainability goals, the Belmont Forum and partners are supporting a three-stage program for proposals that focuses on integrated qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop Earth-system-based transformation pathways for sustainable development.
