This month we are very pleased to welcome five new members to our Scientific Steering Committee. The SSC annual meeting will take place in a few weeks here in the US, and top of the agenda is planning for GLP’s 5th Open Science Meeting to be held in late Fall 2024 (exact date and location TBD). For this important community event we seek your input! What would you would like to see as features of our next OSM? Let us know! We welcome your ideas via our Google Form or by email to me at adebremond@glp.earth.

Join us for one of two informal online Meet & Greets for new GLP Members and established Members who would like to engage more deeply with GLP. Despite worldwide prevalence, post-agricultural landscapes remain one of the least constrained human-induced land carbon sinks. To appraise their role in rebuilding the planet’s natural carbon stocks through ecosystem restoration, we need to better understand their spatial and temporal legacies, write Stephen M. Bell and He Yin in Nature Communications.

A new paper in World Development by members of the GLP Remittance Dynamics and Land Change Working Group seeks to understand the specific roles remittances play in land system changes to help clarify the multiple processes associated with migration and their independent and interactive effects.

On 19 April 2023, the European Parliament approved the new EU legislation to ensure “deforestation-free” imports and exports of seven “forest-risk” commodities (wood, palm oil, rubber, cocoa, coffee, cattle and soy, as well as their derived products). The Council of the European Union is expected to approve the law later in the spring of 2023.

The implications of this Regulation are unsure, but it is likely to have consequences for tropical forest landscapes and people, including smallholder producers of these commodities.

In this webinar, the GLP Telecoupling Research Towards Sustainable Transformation of Land Systems Working Group will start a discussion on how telecoupling research can be used to advance our understanding of this new EU regulation (including interactions, spillovers, leakages, feedbacks…)?

The webinar will include three short discussion inputs by Almut Schilling-Vacaflor (Osnabrück University), Mairon Bastos Lima (Stockholm Environment Institute) and Armando Valdés-Velasquez (Wyss Academy for Nature and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia) followed by a joint discussion among panelists and participants.

How Social Considerations Improve the Equity and Effectiveness of Ecosystem Restoration
A new paper in BioScience outline how social processes that are critical to restoration equity and effectiveness can be better incorporated in restoration science and policy.
