Dear colleague, 

We congratulate all of the scientists (including many GLP Members!) who worked on the Assessment on the Sustainable Use of Wild Species and the Assessment Report on the Diverse Values and Valuation of Nature, which were launched in conjunction with the ninth session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES 9) in Bonn, Germany, from 3 to 9 July 2022.

Although July is usually a slow month at the IPO, we are pleased to see so many calls, events and jobs (especially post-docs!) posted by our members. We hope you'll also take a look at the section below on funding opportunities from Future Earth, which is partnering with the European Space Agency to launch collaborative projects through research networks, of which GLP is one!

Open call for Future Earth Global Research Networks (e.g. GLP): collaborative Earth Observation activities 2022-2023

The European Space Agency (ESA) and Future Earth have partnered to facilitate the development and uptake of Earth observation (EO) data by Future Earth’s research networks, and GLP is a Future Earth Global Research Network!

The partnership includes seed funding to stimulate new collaborations around the climate datasets provided under ESA’s Climate Change Initiative. Under this initiative, ESA has developed a suite of 23 Essential Climate Variable (ECV) data products in response to the UNFCCC’s need for systematic observations of the climate system. The products merge data from multiple satellites and sensors to create long time-series of climate data, which are as stable and consistent as possible and suitable for a range of climate research applications.

Applications must be submitted by members of a Future Earth GRN (e.g. GLP), in a topic aligning with the research priorities of the network.

To address the multifaceted challenges involved in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Future Earth’s Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability Initiative seeks to support the production of knowledge and enhance the understanding of systemic interactions, competing development agendas, and transformations in concrete contexts across diverse temporal and spatial scales. 

This Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) aims to encourage and enhance collaboration between various research communities working on pathways for sustainability within and beyond the Future Earth community. 

The Pathways Postdoctoral Grant will support a Pathways Project aimed at synthesizing existing knowledge about the approaches for developing pathways within a specific theme.

An information and networking webinar will be held on Wednesday 3 August 2022, from 14:00 to 16:00 Central European Summer Time (UTC+2) as an accompaniment to the call for EOIs. During the first hour, organizers will present the Pathways Initiative and provide detailed information on the Postdoctoral Grants, with time for questions. The second hour will be an opportunity for networking with the aim of forming working groups around specific themes in preparation for your application. The first hour will be recorded and posted to the website for those who cannot join.

On 30 June 30 2022, the GLP Working Group on ‘Co-Production on Sustainable Land Systems’ hosted its second networking event, which featured a presentation by Dr. Amare Bantider from the Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC) in Ethiopia. He shared his perspective on the topics and experiences related to co-production through the learning watershed approach in Ethiopia.
