Dear colleague, While it's likely true that Earth Day is every day for us land system scientists, today marks 51 years since the first Earth Day gathered more than more 20 million people across the US for a ‘teach in’ to raise awareness about our need to care for the environment. Looking at the calendar, now one year into a global pandemic and more than half a century from that first Earth Day, I remain convinced that the efforts of this community—by all of you—to learn about and understand the land systems of our planet are more critical and relevant than ever before. Together we can make a better future for people and nature, mobilizing new knowledge, insights, and perspectives, and engaging with those inhabiting and using the world’s lands such that multiple meanings and values can be recognized. So on this Earth Day I want to thank all of you for your efforts and for what you are doing every day to advance land system science and to support this community. Keep taking good care of yourselves and each other!
