XVI (EAAE) “Raising the Impact of Agricultural Economics: Multidisciplinarity, Stakeholder Engagement and Novel Approaches” July 20-23, 2021 Online
Agricultural land abandonment, which represents the cessation of farming activity and may result in vegetation recovery, is a widespread global land-use change process with strong implications to society and the environment. However, the spatial distribution of patterns and drivers is not well understood and the potential land use on abandoned lands. Our session welcomes contributions on understanding the drivers of agricultural land abandonment, such as the role of policies, individual factors, such as farm succession, life course, and change of production technology. We are welcoming studies stemming from the neoclassic profit maximization, behavioral science perspective, but also interdisciplinary studies and other theoretical elaborations. We expect to present the studies on the potential reuse of abandoned lands, such as recultivation for agricultural production, forestry, game reserves. We invite to contribute to perceptions of land abandonment, rural-urban transition, and differentiation of different trajectories of land abandonment.
